Max and TcT

Max & TcT start a race @ point S. Max runs from S to F to T, turns around and runs back to F. TcT runs from S to F @ 8 min/mi and from F to P @ 13 min/mi. He meets Max coming back @ P. TcT turns around and runs w/ Max to F @ 8 1/2 min/mi. How far does TcT run if they finish in 3 hrs 45 min.?

The answer to the question is "about 24 miles." To get it, you use Distance = Rate * Time several times and solve several equations in several unknowns. If interested, leave a comment and I'll explain it.

It rained hard and was quite cold and windy, so I took time to get dry and warm after my half marathon. I then ran about 4 miles and found "Max." He was tired and was "walk / running." We continued to "walk / run" to the finish.

I think I ended up running a total of about 22 miles; my 1/2 marathon plus a bit more than twice 4 due to some back and forth running.

What actually happens and what you pose as a "word problem" can be quite different things! "Max" learned a few things and so did I. He finished the race running and was ahead of about half the runners. Not bad for an extremely challenging day!

interesting puzzle and answer and sorry I didn't have time to work on it. Wanted to say "good efforts" to both B Boys for staying with it in the running department dispite weather, etc.
