DeeDee is now a Part of History (part two)

Max,

This picture shows where you thought we were and were we actually were. The red circle shows where you thought we were, and the green circle shows where we were. You were very close! You must have really scanned the picture to find someone that looked that much like Mike. Maybe he has a twin. We are pretty sure that is us because of were we are in relation to the fence behind us. We were in the very back of that section.

DeeDee is now a Part of History!

Here we can see out new president. And if we look close enough, we can see Barack has a few more friendly visitors!

Dais iz a veryashun awn da stah theme. Id iz cawld da "Super Stah" rose. Dais bud's foah u BuBe!

Blue Moon

The name came "out of the blue" and it's much better than "13-point skip-3 star-circle interlocking 37-piece 4-color puzzle." My previous puzzle seemed too rigid and actually ended up being too easy to assemble. I reverted back to a more wavy design and somewhere along the way had the brilliant idea of keeping the round edge pieces. Creativity is often accidental.

Gigapan.org

This picture is from a website called Gigapan.org. It was taken during the inauguration while President Obama was speaking. If you click on the picture you will be able to see it better. The red arrow indicates approximately where Mike and I were standing. If you go to the web site, you can really zoom in on the picture, since it is a multi-gigapixel panorma. Mike and I actually found ourselves in the picture! The technology is pretty amazing .

Four Color Map Theorem

I hope Mr. Toby doesn't mind but this post has nothing to do with him (although, being a star himself, he will probably not mind yet another star story).

Per usual, click the pic.

Poem For President Barack Hussein Obama

Former Connecticut poet laureate Marilyn Nelson on the Yale campus. (JOHN WOIKE)

Poem For President Barack Hussein Obama
January 20, 2009 (Yes, we did!)

The Hartford Courant
January 20, 2009

Moments arrive and flee,
Each its own expiration date.
And we make history
Whether we're sleepwalking or not.

Moments arrive and flee.
Our momentary choices flow
Through the fingers we hold out now.
Each choice, made or not, defines tomorrow.

Whether we're schemers advancing ourselves,
Or whether we're dream-makers, time will tell.
What will the future say of us?
That we were torturers?

That our rich greed
Drove the world to the brink?
That we bequeathed pollution and national debt?
Or that, enlightened, we started to think.

That, in the moment we chose to vote for hope,
We changed our fear into new confidence.
That we woke from deep sleep
With restored wisdom and intelligence.

Then we used all the leaves
Of the family table, and brought in chairs.
Then we rolled up our sleeves
And started cleaning the earth, the sea, the air.

Like us, the future will thank all the names
People use for the One,
For making this remarkable young man
To lead America toward our highest aims.

May his greatness grow with each tick of the clock:
Barack, Barack, Barack, Barack, Barack!
Bring out the fireworks! Ring all the bells!
Let's celebrate President Obama! Let's sing ourselves!

Missing Link

I love my Universal Star and will talk more about it in the future. It is too complex and wonderful to dwell on it here; I just couldn't resist a quick mention just to thank Max and to tell him how much I appreciate it

I of course was taken by BuBe's brief and Max's totally unbrief response to my challenge to find names for the pieces in my latest puzzle.

Vah! Denuone Tobee loquebar? Me ineptum. Interdum modo elabitur. (Oh! Was I speaking Toby again? Silly me. Sometimes it just sort of slips out.)

Sorry about that. Where was I?

While I was still admiring Max's marvelous names I spotted something that was terribly wrong with the image. There were only 10 pieces. On careful reading of my poast you will notice I talk briefly about the piece count and how the puzzle fits together. It's also well known that I always (well not always always but almost always) have a prime number of pieces in my puzzles.

I have no idea how the above piece didn't get included in the collection Max was naming but fortunately "he" is not lost and I wanted to show "him" to you, just to keep the record straight. I've got at least one idea for a name for this guy but welcome your suggestions.

TcT's Universal Star

I call this TcT's Universal Star because he got the inspiration from some kind of Higher Power out there in the Universe (which he and others might agree was from God) -- which enabled him to resist the temptation to have alcohol for one whole year. There are billions of stars out there and TcT even has one real one that I bought for him a few years ago (in the constellation of Leo I think). Now we can add one more to his collection of those in this big Universe. TcT is now one of them himself! Congratulation on your 1-year Universal Star!

So many things in your puzzle!

Your puzzle of the star is very cool. I see some things in it. Maybe you see others, too!

All-star Max

Here's my stah for Max who deserves it for a variety of reasons. He is learning tiny-c, which is not easy. star.tc, when "fed" 15, says there are three unique 15-point stahs, a "skip-1," a "skip-3" and a "skip-6." Follow how his stah is drawn: start at point #1, skip the next 3 points to point #5, skip the next 3 points to point #9 etc. Eventually you arrive back at point #1. Not unlike "clock arithmetic," star.tc relies on the "modulus" operator (%) to figure out which skip numbers produce stahs. I called this poast "All-star Max" because 1. Max is an all-star on our team and 2. the number of unique stahs happens to be related to a famous function in math called the "totient function" which is used in totient.tc. A sample run of the allstars function that appears in this program may be viewed at allstars.txt.

GRAFTON - Tinking aboot starting an eggzersize prograym in da nu yeer, butz concerned dat u might be too owld? Teyell dat tah Grafton resident Raymond J. Lussier.

Mr. Lussier turned 80 Dec. 6 and celebrated by dewing wat he duz mohst dayz -- gowin foah a run. He reecentlee finished da Whitinsville Thanksgiving 5-mile road race in wun hour and 28 seconds, aboot a 12-minute-per-mile pace. Da yeer he turned 60, he ran six marathons (a marython iz 26.2 miyellz) ova a period ov seven weeks, wid 2 half-marathons in beatween.

"Dat juz shooz u, if u trayn foah id, u cayne dew eneedin," he sayd at a gathering ov a dozen udda runners ages 2 tah 72 hoo accompanied him awn a 2.5-mile birfday jog along da Blackstone Canal.

Mr. Lussier waited unetill he wuz 49 and hiz six chilldrin had growd befoah he starded running.

"Ize starded owd gradually wid summ eggzersize, joggin in playz and denn joggin aroond da trak. Wun ov mye nieces encouraged mee tah enter a 5-mile race in Spencer. Id gotz mee yntarezded and motivated tah trayn mowa," he sayd.

Zoon, weekly road races wur a staple ov Mr. Lussier's calendar, and hiz race tiemz improved. He entered da 1983 Boston Marython az an unregistered "bandit" and finished in a respectable 3 hours and 42 minuets. Da effort barely wore him owd.

Da former sales engineer foah Sprague Electric sayd, "Whin Ize finished da marython, Ize boarded a arrowplayn tah goe awn a business trip tah Arizona."

Zins denn, he haz run 40 or zo marathons, in addition tah countless shorter races and 15 tah 20 triathlons, witch r multisport events dat include running, bicycling and swimming.

Mr. Lussier haz replaced hiz earlier 50-miles-per-week training regimen - mach ov witch occurred at 4 a.m. befoah wuk - wid faw or five dayz a week ov running (useyulely three tah five miyellz), rowing awn a masheen, kayaking and gowin tah Bally Total Fitness in Worcester tah stretch and lift weights. He alzo joins a zmahl group ov udda mature runners foah a weekend run awn wun ov da area trails in or aroond Lake Park.

Mr. Lussier encouraged beginning runners tah fuhst set summ goles and stay motivated by signing upe foah a race. Find a running group if u cayne; sharing da sport keeps motivation hieye. Butz he cautioned against letting one's eggzersize commitment becomb a burden tah uddars.

One More Star for DeeDee!

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I am unable to cut down on my star making habits for all those people in need of them. I already awarded you (DeeDee) with your gold star -- but since I was premature with it, I wanted to RE-AWARD you with yet another kind of goldish one for your 1 year and 5+ hours of time without cigs -- for not having smoked 7,327 of them, for the $2,564.45 you saved, and for your most awesome 3 weeks, 4 days, 10 minutes, and 35 seconds of life SAVED due to this accomplishment. If you ever have "a feeling" for them again -- and you just might... just remember one thing. (you may have heard this before). You may go another 9 years making it 10 years of time without them, 73,270 of them will not smoked, $25,644.50 will have been saved, and approximately 250+ days of life will be saved due to your continued efforts. BUT, all it takes is one cigarette and every single thing that added up so nicely before becomes one number instantly. That number is zero. It takes only a second to make the big number a zero. Sorry for such a sobering fact. One thing is clear though. You have done awesomely well and it was one day at a time. Great job! You can keep it all going. You've shown what it takes. Courage!

One Year Smober!

1year 5:42 smoke-free, 7,327 cigs not smoked, $2,564.45 saved, 3w 4d 10:35 life saved

Security will be unprecedented for Obama's Inauguration Day | Richmond ...

NEIL H. SIMON MEDIA GENERAL NEWS SERVICEPublished: January 10, 2009
WASHINGTON -- Police in riot gear. Military troops patrolling the nation's capital. Bridges from Virginia into Washington closed to public traffic.
The Jan. 20 inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama will feature unprecedented security measures to manage a crowd that could swell to 2 million people.
Washington's Metropolitan Police Department, aided by 96 departments nationwide, will double its force to about 8,000 officers. And authorities will block off about 3.5 square miles downtown, a larger area than for past inaugurations.
More than 100 Virginia State Police troopers will be in the capital, and others will step up patrols in Northern Virginia.
"We always plan for the worst and hope for the best," said Corinne Geller, a spokeswoman for the Virginia State Police. "A good day in Northern Virginia and you have gridlock."
Because of the large number of dignitaries expected, the Department of Homeland Security designated the inauguration a "National Special Security Event."
There have been no credible terrorist threats against this inauguration, officials said.
Bicycles will be prohibited on the Metro, though riders can use bike valet lots at the Jefferson Memorial or on 16th Street between K and I streets Northwest.
Thirteen entry points to the secure area around the National Mall will have airport-style screening gates. Expect up to a three-hour wait to get through before Obama's noontime oath and address. Arrangements have been made to assist the disabled, officials said.
"People who go to large sporting events, large political events, certainly this will not be anything new," said David Heyman, director of the Homeland Security program at the Center for Strategic International Studies.
"Except for the volume of people, which will be unprecedented, it's perhaps not unlike going to the airport and going through security."
About 13,000 National Guardsmen are expected to be on the National Mall. But watchful civilians can play a role, security analysts said.
"If they see something suspicious, there will be police every 10 feet on the street. They should just let somebody know," Heyman said.
Some questions and answers about attending:
Q. Can I bring a camera or cell phone?
A. Yes. Cell-phone lines are expected to be jammed. Security officials recommend communicating by text messages, which use less bandwidth and are more likely to go through than phone calls. Camera bags and tripods are prohibited.
Q. Should I do anything to prepare for my personal security?
A. Prepare a security plan for your family. Designate a meeting place, such as your hotel. If separated, children should look for a police officer and know a family member's phone number. Also, designate a contact back home for your group to call in case of emergency.
Q. If I have something taken away, can I get it back?
A. No. Seized items will not be returned.
Q. I have a disability and can't wait in line. Where can I go?
A. Those with disabilities and inauguration tickets should go to the intersection of North Capitol and E streets or to the intersection of South Capitol and E streets. U.S. Capitol Police will shuttle passengers on golf carts from those locations to one of the security checkpoints.

tiny-c basic language constructs etc.

Max's 'gowuld' stahs (I really need to update the translator to allow the word 'gold' to have 2 definitions, 'gowuld' and 'goaldin,' but I digress ... ) have made such a hit that they've got BuBe's granddaughter tracing shapes from them and now ... lead TWEP programmer TcT is using his in the cover page for the first printing of the soon to be on the New York Times Best Seller list, right up there w/ Danica McKellar's "Kiss My Math," "tiny-c basic language constructs" booklet. This 23 page crash course in tiny-c programming is available online as 6 linked documents and, lucky you, are the 1st to know and see.

Gowuld Stahs foah Bube, DeeDee and Tineecee

We now officially award Bube with her new Gold Star. With highly skilled intuitive reasoning powers, she has nailed Tobee and DeeDee's puzzler (AB)^2 = CAB with values for A, B and C. In a short period of time, she came up with C = 6, A = 2 and B = 5. This was confirmed by her equation 25 x 25 = 625. Nice work Bube! A+ for you!

And below we also find a new (rather abstract) star for Tinyc. Why abstract? Well, he has gone to great lengths thinking about the SEND+MORE=MONEY problem. His programs are very clearly thought out. NAILING complicated things is complicated -- but after days and sometimes weeks of learning how to build his own better hammer, he finds these problems are answered with a "glow" of simplicity and elegance. He nailed it! A+ for Tinyc!

Finally I would like to remind everyone that DeeDee was the first person to actually SOLVE the SEND+MORE=MONEY problem WITHOUT the need of a program. Max had a few too many Math Alerts with this problem, but DeeDee nailed it with exactly the right answer. We at M4CE (Math4Chip Enterprises) would like to honor her for her work! SEND + MORE = MONEY, she found, was equivalent to 9567 + 1085 = 10652. A+ for DeeDee!

AND!!!

We must also not forget DeeDee has accomplished something MOST difficult for MANY people in the world! She has actually quit smoking for ONE ENTIRE YEAR! We're talking 365 DAYS here! DeeDee, I am sure this was not easy at times. Seriously, you have done something really wonderful. You have every right to feel proud. A+++ for you! And, if you would like to share with us all the statistical details on this, I am sure others will be interested too! I hope you do.
