Books I've Been Reading ...

This post doesn't exactly fit in with this blog but then again, since it's now on this blog, I guess it does.

A strange lead-in indeed. But in a way, it's an excellent example of the kind of thing I'm reading about.

Let's get to the point. The three things I am currently reading are

1. "The Universe In A Single Atom" by His Holiness the Dalai Lama
2. "Quantum Healing" by Deepak Chopra
3. "The Many-Worlds Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics" by Hugh Everett

I will refrain from getting too carried away explaining how I got interested in these works, what I have learned by reading them etc. There are many common threads that connect the three books.

In this "Age of Google" you should be able to learn a great deal about the above by searching on these titles / authors.

I will tell you that I learned about the third entry above when I fell upon a NOVA documentary featuring Hugh Everett's son Mark Everett. Please visit

Many-Worlds Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics

I had never heard of Hugh Everett until I saw the NOVA program. His son Mark is a singer in a Rock Band called Eels and is a totally non-technical guy. If you ever get a chance to see this NOVA show, don't miss it.

Here are a couple of sentences from Deepak Chopra's book that might wet your appetite:

pg 69 "But now we know that the mind and body are like parallel universes. Anything that happens in the mental universe must leave tracks in the physical one."

pg 76 "Before these discoveries science declared we are physical machines that have somehow learned to think. Now it dawns that we are thoughts that have learned to create a physical machine."

"The Universe In A Single Atom" was a gift to my wife by one of her sisters. I think Amy especially would enjoy this one.

So ... that's it ... just a little "check 'em out and buy 'em / read 'em" for a Wednesday afternoon from yours truly.

Changing Seeds on Memorial Day

This photograph will need some explanation -- but it will take me some time to put together the interesting story behind it. What I will say though is that I have decided not to plant my Casper seed(s). Instead I am hopeful Tinyc may be able to harvest something fine from Casper at his place -- while I try to create two (yes 2) pumpkins from two different "past sources" here in Marlborough (and possibly one other location). The full and interesting story will be coming soon with a nice array of images (taken this morning). This may take me some time to put together, but I will try post it soon. Until then, this image will remain a bit of a mystery. Happy Memorial Day!

Meet Jose and Melo!

Like Max, my neighbor Joann has two new friends. Their names are Jose and Melo and I thought you'd like to meet them.

Jose's a girl and is the black striped kitty. That of course means the orange kitty is Melo (who's a boy).

"Melo" is pronounced Mee-Low but I like to think of him and Mellow (as in Yellow).

"Jose" is pronounced Jo-Zee.

Jo named her new kitties after her grandparents, Josephine and Carmelo.

Time To Celebrate!

I'm proud of my Tunxis Tutor Certificate. To earn it, I completed 25 hours of tutoring and 10 hours of training. We had a Certificate Celebration last night. I've added what I was given to my wall.

3rd generation Oregon Max Giant Russian Sunflower

This 3rd generation seed planted by Emma 4-1-09, nurtured by BuBe in cellar under grow lights, hardened off in shed for a week, then transplanted to garden 4-29-09 after checking night time temps for next 10 days. It was a battle in the cellar, as the bottom 4 sets of leaves wilted from mildew. Since in the ground, it is looking purty good!
Since this little one had such a hard start, I would not be surprised if the two new sprouts being nurtured by TcT and Max will surpass Emma's sunflower by leaps and bounds. But we are giving it the ol' college try!
