Eunoia

This has nothing to do w/ Toby, Toby Speak, Pumpkins, Art, Halloween, tinyc, politics etc. but it does have to do with words so it belongs here. Plus, we've gotta give Amy, DiDi, Tobee, Mykesgirl something new to smile at tamale and by latest count I think there are three new dings so ... welcome home!

Eunoia is the shortest word in English containing all five vowels - and it means "beautiful thinking". It is also the title of Canadian poet Christian Bok's book of fiction in which each chapter uses only one vowel.

Mr Bok believes his book proves that each vowel has its own personality, and demonstrates the flexibility of the English language. Below are extracts from each chapter.

from CHAPTER A - FOR HANS ARP

Hassan Abd al-Hassad, an Agha Khan, basks at an ashram - a Taj Mahal that has grand parks and grass lawns, all as vast as parklands at Alhambra and Valhalla. Hassan can, at a handclap, call a vassal at hand and ask that all staff plan a bacchanal - a gala ball that has what pagan charm small galas lack. Hassan claps, and ( tah-dah ) an Arab lass at a swank spa can draw a man's bath and wash a man's back, as Arab lads fawn and hang, athwart an altar, amaranth garlands as fragrant as attar - a balm that calms all angst. A dwarf can flap a palm branch that fans a fat maharajah. A naphtha lamp can cast a calm warmth.

from CHAPTER E - FOR RENE CREVEL

Westerners revere the Greek legends. Versemen retell the represented events, the resplendent scenes, where, hellbent, the Greek freemen seek revenge whenever Helen, the new-wed empress, weeps. Restless, she deserts her fleece bed where, detested, her wedded regent sleeps. When she remembers Greece, her seceded demesne, she feels wretched, left here, bereft, her needs never met. She needs rest; nevertheless, her demented fevers render her sleepless (her sleeplessness enfeebles her). She needs help; nevertheless her stressed nerves render her cheerless
(her cheerlessness enfetters her).

from CHAPTER I - FOR DICK HIGGINS

Hiking in British districts, I picnic in virgin firths, grinning in mirth with misfit whims, smiling if I find birch twigs, smirking if I find mint sprigs.

Please turn on JavaScript. Media requires JavaScript to play. Midspring brings with it singing birds, six kinds, (finch, siskin, ibis, tit, pipit, swift), whistling shrill chirps, trilling chirr chirr in high pitch. Kingbirds flit in gliding flight, skimming limpid springs, dipping wingtips in rills which brim with living things: krill, shrimp, brill - fish with gilt fins, which swim in flitting zigs. Might Virgil find bliss implicit in this primitivism? Might I mimic him in print if I find his writings inspiring?

from CHAPTER O - FOR YOKO ONO

Loops on bold fonts now form lots of words for books. Books form cocoons of comfort - tombs to hold bookworms. Profs from Oxford show frosh who do post-docs how to gloss works of Wordsworth. Dons who work for proctors or provosts do not fob off school to work on crosswords, nor do dons go off to dorm rooms to loll on cots. Dons go crosstown to look for bookshops known to stock lots of top-notch goods: cookbooks, workbooks - room on room of how-to-books for jocks (how to jog, how to box), books on pro sports: golf or polo. Old colophons on schoolbooks from schoolrooms sport two sorts of logo: oblong whorls, rococo scrolls - both on worn morocco.

from CHAPTER U - FOR ZHU YU

Gulls churr: ululu, ululu. Ducks cluck. Bulls plus bucks run thru buckbrush; thus dun burrs clutch fur tufts. Ursus cubs plus Lupus pups hunt skunks. Curs skulk (such mutts lurk: ruff, ruff ). Gnus munch kudzu. Lush shrubs bud; thus church nuns pluck uncut mums. Bugs hum: buzz, buzz . Dull susurrus gusts murmur hushful, humdrum murmurs: hush, hush. Dusk suns blush. Surf lulls us. Such scuds hurl up cumulus suds ( Sturm und Druck ) - furls unfurl: rush, rush ; curls uncurl: gush, gush. Such tumult upturns unsunk hulls; thus gulfs crush us, gulp , dunk us - burst lungs succumb.

Why eke verse when these verses deserve temper? He needs help even when he's clever. He renders me bereft, needy. He spends me pretty well. Bye bye energy. Better flee, perplexed!

Brand - What a scandal! A daft prat! Sad, mad Brand. Sack!Ross - No good! Fool. Clot. Stop Ross's work. Show Ross door. Bog off, Ross! Susan Harvey, London

To 'show off'; wordworm snoot who jots down words of Wordsworth or Byron by lots of solo o's on show. Martin Boronte, London, UK

Yes! Here we see English text expressed ever freer. Letters re-dressed, remember French seer?
Marko B, Leeds, Yorkshire.

Yes, very clever: yet empty. He expended energy yet he vexes deeply. Berk!

A dry land, flat and sandy. Sahara. Man can´t stand that warmth. Man lacks brawn and brass. Damp lands: man has a ball. Sand and warmth man can´t stand.

I like this. Timing is implicit in its intrinsic thinking. It sings its vivid insight in whistling lips.

Ceiling Cat

Kate explained to me why she caught on to Toby Speak so quickly by saying she knew about icanhascheezburger and also was familiar with something call Ceiling Cat (which I had never heard of). She wrote

"Ceiling Cat was once I think an innocent reference to how a cat would refer to a kitty god (and the devil was 'Basement Cat,' of course). Someone had translated entire passages of the bible in 'can-has cat' speak. It was hysterical."

Unfortunately, the idea has degenerated into something else (details not important). I finally decided to do a little research despite this turn of events, hoping to find something that captures the original idea and found that good ol' icanhas has a boatload of really wonderful images, one of which appears below. To see 'em all, just click the link below.

Lunar Mysteries

Hi! This morning I was looking out my window and I saw the moon. I think I was quite lucky to be able to get this picture of it at about 6:30 this morning. There was very little light but I held the camera quite still. I have included my question for the day along with this photograph I took. It involves a PHASE issue. I am completely stumped as to why the moon appears so much like a totally thin crescent this morning, while both my lunar calendar AND my regular wall calendar indicate that it should be half (which in lunar-phase terms is actually considered a "quarter" moon.) Anybody have any thoughts on this mystery? Is the stock market so off the beam this morning that it is throwing the entire planet off its normal path around our sun?

The Ohbamah Projection

I will attempt to put the pie charts into perspective over the course of these next 9 days and then compare the results with November 4th's actual outcome. Think of it as the Ohbamah Projection.

*Dancing With The Stars*

It seems appropriate on this the first day our cowntdown hits single digits to wrap up the Dance Partners puzzler.

It would take too much computer time to answer the question "What's Hottie Hostess' partner's number if Hottie plus her invited guests total 1000?" (in the spirit of the 1000-point star problem) but here are all the solutions for dancer counts from 18 to 150.

(For the really technically interested, here's the source code of the program that solved this extremely interesting and non-trivial problem).

Never miss an opportunity to roll that die one more time. Despite the fact that DiDi / Toby / Amy's post is still wet behind the ears (and a reminder that Barack himself is on a bit of a roll), I can't resist telling all those thousands of tiny-c programmers out there that that dancing partner puzzle finally met its match and was solved this morning, by computer. Not unlike that palindromic odometer puzzle (also from Car Talk), after both Amy and I solved it I began to realize there *had* to be a way to automate the brute force algorithm via a computer program.

It's always a good idea to refresh your skill at *anything* you once knew but have not tried for a while so I started typing away in tiny-c last night only to finally crash with a mental note that I was either going to drop the project or hit it again this morning. I had to get out the book, recall all sorts of details about the syntax and semantics etc. etc. and then beat my head against the wall on the true nature of the problem at hand before I finally nailed it.

(I know there will probably be at most 3 people out there there will read this drivel and even they will probably have little clue what the listing below means. How the general / non-technical remarks above finally crystallized into the victory below is hard to explain.)

A "screen scrape" of the final run is up top. Here's the listing:
