Grate tah zee a nu Tobee graphic and a nu poozle! Ize tink Ize hav an anzer butz id rechoirz dat u yews parentheses. Am Ize awn da ryet trak?
BTW, haz anybody bin paying attention tah numbah ov dots awn owah visitor's map? Itz upe tah 5 nuhow and we've had 65 visitors zins da Clustrmaps "widget" wuz added.
Yes, you are on the right track :-)
OK - How 'bout
7*(3+3/7)
?
I played around with the 7's and 3's for about 20 minutes last night and came up with "23" and other solutions that were not "24." Your solution sure looks good, TcT. It must be THE one. Nice graphic there Dee Dee.
consistancy is my name - I don't get how TcT's math is right? Am not saying he is wrong, just saying once again that I don't get it. I worked on this for way too long last night and again today. Back to housecleaning and cooking.
Sorry blogger pals, I think I am out of the loop. :(
Please don't kill me for this.
If you have something like
5*(2 + 8)
you can add what's inside the parentheses first (getting 10)
5*10
and then do the multiplication
50
or ... you can "distribute" the 5 across each of the numbers in the parentheses and then add the products
5*2 + 5*8
10 + 40
50
You get the same result (namely 50).
This property of numbers is given the fancy name "the distributive property of multiplication over addition."
In our case
7*(3 + 3/7)
By the above, "distribute" the 7
across each of the "terms" inside the parentheses and then add the products.
7*3 + 7*(3/7)
21 + 3
24
In the above, 7*(3/7) = 3 because
7*(3/7) = 21/7 and 7 goes into 21 three times.
If you can't get enough of this ... the reason why
7*(3/7) = 21/7
is that multiplication is really "repeated addition" so
7*(3/7) is short for
3/7 + 3/7 + 3/7 + 3/7 + 3/7 + 3/7 + 3/7
(there are 7 "terms" in the above)
and Luna tells me the above is
21/7
cuz all the denominators are the same so you just add the numerators (and 3+3+3+3+3+3+3=21).
Godd job TcT, you are as always correct! You get the stah.
here's another stah for your explanation * ! Thanks - I didn't know about the distributive factor.
Of course it pleases me immensely that you understand this. Thanks! Two stahs is two days! I'm on a roll!
PS - I know I've been getting a bit carried away recently by this Clustmaps thingee, but we've got 7 dots now (some worth more than others). One of 'em is in France or one of those Europe-type countries.
