I have tried making tables of numbers and letters of various combinations (0-9, 1-0,9-0, etc) and aligning letters (a-z, z-a) and have spent way more time than I really can affort on this and cannot seem to manage the answer here, so I officially give it up to the three math genius's - Sorry I am so math challenged.
I have solved the other puzzle (XMAS + MAIL + EARLY = PLEASE, and will send TcT the solution, but am not giving the answer here so Max can try it. Murphy's law would have it that I got it on the absolutely last combination I could try.

Well, I think it be time to drop a few hints. DeeDee's managed to nail ALL THREE of these babies so she clearly is da ohfishal winnah. BuBe gave it a good shot but met her match and has released custody to "the other three geniuses" here. This may be hindsight on my part but after solving the simplest one I realized you could think of it this way: think of all two (decimal) digit numbers whose two digits are the same. There is only one that has the additional property (pun accidental but I'll take it) that if you add a single (decimal) digit number to it you get a three (decimal) digit number. OK, now that you've got the magic two digit number, what must that one digit number be so the letters all work?
As I often say, this may confuse more than clarify, but I tried.
For Mr. Max: Your "binary number" approach is NG. We're talkin' decimal. If we were talkin' binary, we'd only be allowed to use two letters.
99+1, but I still don't know how to structure the poozle answer from beginning to end - AGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!
Congratulations on your awards DeeDee! And BuBe it is cool that you got the correct answer for the first one! I am going to email TcT now with my answer for the SEND+MORE=MONEY one. I even wrote a computer program to solve it. Maybe if I got it right he will post it sometime on the blog.
I think I might have gotten this one. Now, I am going to try the harder one about XMAS+MAIL+EARLY=PLEASE to see if I can nail it. This one looks tough!
